REORGANIZATION TERMINAL 3, COPENHAGEN AIRPORT
In summer 2008 VLA carried out an analysis of the possibilities of improving flow in the northern section of Terminal 3. The purpose of the analysis was to identify ways of optimizing the flow to and from regional trains, metro strains, buses, the terminals, and the Hilton hotel. The analysis resulted in a proposal that was implemented between January and May 2009.
The central premise of the final proposal was more space and greater transparency for passengers using the area. This was achieved by reorganising existing functions in a way that placed them along the sides of the terminal walls. This created an open area with access to the various means of transport: a form of station square.
A new information display has been located at one end of the station square with useful check-in details, and two new escalators were installed between the metro balcony and the ground floor of the terminal, a pronounced improvement to access between the metro and the terminal. Allowance had been made for escalators in the original designs for Terminal 3, so very little change was required to the structure itself.
Two new pavilions have replaced the three previous units, each of which had its own visual idiom. A pavilion consists of a permanent wing-shaped awning and a flexible panel and signage system which lessees can adapt to their requirements. There is a pavilion on each side of the station square, and the permanent parts of the pavilions are identical. The shape of the pavilions is based on the other architecture of terminal 3, continuing its simple, flight-inspired visual style.
