COPENHAGEN AIRPORT, TERMINAL 39
In 1936, Architect Vilhelm Lauritzen won 1st prize in an international architectural competition for a new main building at Kastrup Airport. The building was ready for use in 1939 and at the same time the airport changed its name to Copenhagen Airport.
The terminal building became listed in 1998 and one night during September 1999, the complete building was moved 3.8 km on coupled flatbed trucks, across the apron tarmac and take-off runway to its present day site. VLA provided architectural services in connection with the renovation, restoration and rehabilitation of the building to its original form. Today, the building is used for the receiving of special guests at the airport, such as heads of state.
In 2001, the terminal was awarded the Diploma for Beautification of the Capital City. The Europa Nostra Honorary Medal for the preservation of European cultural heritage was awarded in 2003.
