HERLEV HOSPITAL
The VLA vision for the Herlev Hospital extension is based on four goals: Hospital town, a cohesive hospital; an efficient hospital; a future-assured, flexible hospital; and a welcoming hospital.
Hospital town, a cohesive hospital
Our intention is to create a clear, completely new identity for the hospital as a whole. So the new hospital is designed with a desire to make sure that together with the existing Herlev Hospital it is perceived as a cohesive site with a powerful common identity: Hospital town.
An efficient hospital
Hospital town is compact and flexible. This provides for an efficient hospital where just a short walk will take you anywhere, while the broad features of the landscape may be preserved and accentuated too.
A future-assured, flexible hospital
Overall plans for hospitals should dynamically reflect advances in treatment methods, diagnostic equipment, examination techniques and analytical methods. This means that the plan for Herlev Hospital must be robust, and able to meet functional and contemporary requirements, thus allowing internal buildings and extensions to be established as needs evolve.
The friendly hospital
As the new 'quarter' in Hospital The city, the new building is designed closely and flexibly in a much smaller scale than the existing one. The proposed form is based on the notion that actual physical environment is crucial to the healing process that the patient is experiencing.
The VLA proposal was developed in cooperation with Arkitektfirmaet Jens Clementsen, YLP Arkitekter, GHB Landskabsarkitekter and Lemming & Eriksson, civil engineers.
Other competition entries were drawn up by Henning Larsten Architects (winners), Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, Arkitektfirmaet C. F. Møller and the Healthbye group.
