VLA WINS IN ØRESTAD

18.01.2010

The open competition to determine the choice of construction and operation management for public housing projects in the Municipality of Copenhagen is now over. Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter working with Sjælsø and Lejebo was one of the four winning teams.

The winning project is for 49 family homes totalling approximately 5 000 square metres of living space. The homes will form a seven-to-nine storey block in continuation of VLA’s “Stævnen”, a now completed housing project on the southernmost plot in Ørestad. The building is very simple and stylistically pure in concept but will stand out because of the variations in height and the location of windows and balconies. Access to the building is through the courtyard to ensure that this is a lively, attractive space for residents.

The materials chosen are sound and economical and have been thoroughly analysed to ascertain their sustainability. They are durable and recyclable; they are easy to prefabricate, transport, and assemble, and include concrete, timber, steel and glass.
To optimize the construction process the aim is for the components to consist of prefabricated concrete elements. Construction and assembly logistics will be planned so as to minimize wasted materials and excess refuse.

The buildings are designed to meet BR08Low Energy Class 2 (with the possibility of further energy optimization to bring it up to Class 1). It meets the minimum requirements stipulated by “Environment in Building and Plant”, the Municipality of Copenhagen manual for environmentally-oriented urban renewal and new construction.
